Retreat Reflections 2011: Friday

Our last beach day brought us to Friendly Valley Beach by Washburn, WI. This narrow strip of land hides from the world behind tall grass, scrub brush, and trees. A long dirt road leads to the beach with minimal parking on either side and a small gravel lot toward the mouth of the road. Hidden from view, the beach stretches out along the lake inviting one to grab a slice of beach and hang out for a while.

The sand was soft and warm and perfect for building. The kids favorite part of building sand castles is digging the moat around the outside. Sometimes...they never even build a castle!
The day was sunny. Perfect for sitting on the beach and playing, swimming, reading, and enjoying one another's company. Kezia spent the entire day reading her book and sitting half in the water.
Gracia had a great time getting all sandy...and sand really does get everywhere...whether you're wearing a diaper or not :) She was a bit timid by the water so this year was quite relaxing with her near the water.

Tirzah snapped this photo of Justus down by the water as he was working in the sand. I have no idea what camera setting this is, but I really like the picture~very different. very unique. very Justus!
The beach seemed to go on and on and on in both directions. The beach followed the coastline and would disappear around a bend beckoning beachgoers to come further and explore.
One of the really nice features of Friendly Valley Beach happens to be the shallowness of the water for quite a ways out and just when you think it is finally getting deeper you happen upon a sandbar. The girls are quite a ways from shore and you can see how shallow the water is even for Selah!
We spent the evening having a barbecue with our new friends the Smileys and our old friends the Viks. The kids played and played and had a great time together jumping on the trampoline, having fun on the beach, and playing games.
Trampoline: We don't have one of these and kids just love them. They spent several hours every day just jumping away on the trampoline.
The hammock was also a lovely surprise. A great place to sit and watch the kids on the trampoline or read a book or take a nap. There was usually someone taking advantage of this comfy spot during the week.
As the evening drew to a close, we moved inside away from the killer mosquitoes.
Some of the kids played games.
Others worked on puzzles.
While Gracia slept through it all!
Reflecting God's Grace as we live, love, and laugh,
Lori
