We Got Game!

Growing up, Jeff's family played a lot of board games. They rock at practically every board game made in the 1970s and 80s. His mom plays a mean game of scrabble! To this day, Jeff's family enjoys playing board games and we break out the games when they come to visit! Many fun-filled hours have passed while playing scrabble, risk, upwords, boggle, and the like.

My family had game too, but we were more into Football games and Basketball games...not that I'm any kind of athletic mind you, but my dad was a coach and that's what you do...you go watch the games and cheer and visit...it's actually incredibly social...which is probably why I loved it. Now that our kids are older we go and watch them play: football, basketball, baseball, and whatever other sport they happen to be involved in during a particular season. I still love it and some of my more social children enjoy it as well! And my dad comes over to watch his grandkids play the games he loves...and he still coaches from the stands! :)

My family also played games, but we were more into card games: Rook, Pinochle, Crazy Eight, Solitaire. It was an interesting dynamic as our two families merged ( and by merged...I mean Jeff and I got married). I learned a great deal more than I ever thought there was to know about Scrabble and Jeff learned to play Rook. We tried cross-training: teaching his family card games and my family board games...interestly enough, they still preferred the games they had played for years. Learning how to play the game is challenging. Mastering a game takes years. Learning new games after mastering old ones is not always as fun as I think it will be. I'm pretty sure there is a deeper moral lesson here!

Through the years, we've incorporated both board games and card games into our family repertoire of pasttimes. While some in our family appreciate the tried and true, I am always on the lookout for new games (ones that I can actually win!) For Christmas this year, I gave a lot of games.Thankfully, they were well received and we have had great fun with them. They were simple to learn and quick moving so we could learn them fast and then play them over and over for reinforcement.
A few of our favorite card/board games:

A great family game given to us by my brother
and his family for Christmas 2010

Six
One of Jericho's Christmas Presents.
a quick moving strategy game.

Selah's gift: Which she has greatly enjoyed.
She ropes most everyone who walks in the
door into playing this diverse game.
There are many ways to play Spot It
Keeping it interesting and new.

Fantastic Pirate game for Justus!
This a great strategic card game for
kids 8+ Jeff and the boys have had
a blast with this game

A gift for the boys:
They have wanted this game FOREVER.

This is a visual perception game
I got for the family in 2010. I like this
game because  you can play it with 2 players
or a whole lot more; in teams or as individuals
It also keeps the brain sharp! Gotta love that :)

The games that keep us living, loving, and laughing in the Poppinga household,

So glad to see your kids got their own Risk game. Hopefully they'll still like to play it when you come to visit. Our recent favorites are Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan. Andrew, Amy, and Lani like Set but it hurts my head.

A new favorite game of ours is Rory's Story Cubes. We can play as a family from the 2yr old to my 80 year old grandma.
